General Information:

The Los Angeles City Police Department operates a large DIGITAL radio system on the UHF band. The radio system is NOT trunked but is a conventional APCO Project 25 (P-25 Digital) compliant digital radio system.

Listening to the LAPD requires a digital-capable scanner. Uniden and Radio Shack make scanners capable of monitoring P25 Digital radio systems. Current models include:

  Uniden BC250D (Base/Mobile) (Requires BCi25D APCO 25 Card)
Uniden BC785D (Handheld) (Requires BCi25D APCO 25 Card)

  Uniden BC796D (Base/Mobile)
  Uniden BC296D (Handheld)

  Radio Shack Pro-96 (Handheld)

P25 Digital Motorola ASTRO radios are available to the news media and others wishing to pay the price (about $1500 to $3000 per radio). Please note that although digital-compatible radios are sold on places like eBay, you still must get them programmed which requires expensive Motorola software. SCMA cannot provide any information or sources for radios or programming!
