Admin is correct. Not only scanners are not able to detect Encrypted systems, it is illegal to decode or intercept these signals in any way, shape or form. Bottom line, Pasadena PD is gone forever... your best bet is to monitor CHP Altadena or the Altadena Sheriff's station, which does broadcast major crime reports for officer safety reasons.

Actually, no. The comms are ENCRYPTED. Having a P-25 scanner won't help. No scanner can decode encrypted systems. Just like Santa Monica PD or Orange County law enforcement. This is a different issue from the narrowbanding that recently took place on ICIS.

Pasadena Police still can be herd if one owns a Uniden/Bearcat Digital Police Scanners they
were design to scan the new digital setup. Uniden and GRE was prepared when the FCC had issue
the new narrow band change. One just has to buy a new model to update out of analog.

And this is not new. Back in the early 1960s, LAPD comms were still being rebroadcast over 1630 - 1660 kHz frequencies, and all of my adult relatives were told by a serving LEO, a fellow relative, it was a crime to retune a simple AM band receiver (usually needing nor more than a simple screw adjustment) in order to hear the PD communications. And then in the 1980s when many PDs went to 800 mHz band, some PD chiefs raided local Radio Shack stores and confiscated the store's supply of frequency convertors. When trunking systems started to be used I knew LEOs who told me the scanners made to follow truncked systems would be made illegal and removed from stores selling them any day now. So it goes, YMMV.

Give them hell Irv!
If you lose, California should pass a law that amateur radio is exempt from the cell phone rules for medicinal use.

comment from italy old heath owner : in my opinion i suggest to see on ebay the kits that are most wanted and price go very high ( see SA2060 or the automatic version, wattmeters ,SB220 etc.) all materials related to Ham general use .On yahoo heathkit groups a query can be made to all members in order to see the actual ham interest/suggestion .
good luck
